M&S Credit Note

I went to M&S today to buy belated birthday presents for my nieces, but unfortunately the credit note I had expired 3 days ago. I was due to go shopping last week, but have been off sick from work and was not up to going out at all.

I was told there is nothing they can do about it, I had a year to spend the credit note etc.

Does anyone know if this is 'legal'

If it is, this obviously means not only are M&S making interest on the money I had in a credit note, they are now £18 better off as they never sold me any goods, but still have my money.

When in the store, I was told there wasn't anyone who could help, I tried to explain I had not wanted to spend the money prior to now, was due to last week, but was not well so didn't go shopping.

Seems they are not interested.

Does anyone know if it is worth contacting head office about this?

Thanks

Jenny

  • The M and S Credit note I had clearly showed the expiry date, which was twelve months. When I used it to buy items, they took the credit note and reissued a new one with the surplus. the expiry date remained the same. So for a few weeks after recieving the credit note, I did not need any cash at M and S. Result, no cash to M and S, credit note used in about three weeks and Mrs Freda happy with lots of naught knickers.

oooooooooooh and Freddie happy as well!

I had used the credit note once and been issued with the remainder, but I no longer work near a M&S and as it looks like a receipt I often end up turning it out of purse and forgetting about it (which is what I had done). So when I knew I had to get some items for presents it seemed an ideal time to use it. I hadn't realised I was so close to the use by date though.

So as I originally said, is there any mileage in complaining as they have had my money but I have not received goods from them?
  • To be fair it did look like a receipt and I had to keep it separate to save it. As for the mileage in asking for an extensions, a few nice words I suppose would go amiss, a tear here and there may help. (Just metion Freddie and them knickers!. Not only that, but the Pu55Y really did enjoy their ice cream)

12 months isn't bad!! Some shops seem to have an even shorter credit note expiry date. I'm sure I was given one somewhere that had just 3 months to spend it, but then it was my fault for loosing the receipt when I wanted to return something, so giving me credit was a good will gesture, as I couldn't prove when I'd bought it.

I would write to their customer services explaining the circumstances (being ill, and no longer working near M&S), enclosing a photocopy of the expired credit note, and see if they'll extend the date. I don't think they HAVE to do it, but it's worth a try.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Thanks for giving me the courage to try again at M&S, I went to another branch today and went straight to customer services, who called a supervisor.

I explained that I knew I had 12 months, but not working near M&S any longer and money being tighter than before I had not spent the credit note on just anything (flowers, make up etc) and was saving it to spend on presents for nieces etc, but being ill had meant I had missed spending it. SO now not only had I not enjoyed the flowers I had lost the money etc, which I could ill afford to do.

The supervisor said she was unable to help, I asked if there was anything they could do, as a goodwill gesture, she went to get the manager.

I explained the above again and he ummed and ahhed for a while, then said on this occassion only he would allow me to use it as a goodwill gesture, so long as I spent it now, I've never been so quick off the mark to get the goods.

    So well done M & S.

Can someone please move this from the rant to a heaven sent as they have really made my day (and my nieces)

    Thanks:j
