Thinkpad R50e DVD problem

Two years ago, we got technophobe FIL an R50e Thinkpad from Staples. He's actually become reasonably proficient and uses it a fair amount. Recently though, I think the DVD rewriter has died, but just wanted to check in case anyone thought it might be an installation issue. If it is dead, I suspect we'll just get him an external USB replacement.

In properties, the system reports this device as working properly. However, inserting a CD leads to a lot of activity, then nothing. Trying to left click and 'open' results in 'D:\ is not accessible. This request could not be performed because of an I/O error'.

I found something on Google Groups which suggested re-installing cdrom.inf, but cdrom.inf doesn't exist anywhere. (OS is XP Home).

Any ideas?
