This isn't map updates as such but it's all the points of interest and it's free too:

The cheapest way I've found is to set up an account on My Garmin and register your satnav with them, order the update maps DVD (took about a month to arrive) and then pay for the unlock code online in dollars (hope your credit card doesn't impose ridiculous charges). The cost is $75+VAT, and my Nationwide CC gave me a rate of a smidgeon over $1.99 to the £.

If you want to add Points of Interest have a look at https://www.pocketgpsworld.com. They have about 200,000, they also have a speed camera database that is cheaper than Garmin's

For updating the maps do what John Gray suggested. You could try looking at the various online retailers and see if the update disc is cheaper but it's unlikely to be.

BTW if you bought your Sat Nav after 1st December 2007 then you should be eligible for a free upgrade. Register it on the website and it should tell you.

The online retailer I looked at was Global Positioning Systems, now suddenly on the Expansys website (?), which will sell you the Garmin City Navigator NT Europe (2008) Update DVD plus unlock code, and deliver within a couple of days, for £57.83, + £5.45 P&P, plus VAT, total £74.35. Guess why I went with the slower Garmin mechanism?!

John, What version of the maps cd did you receive, as I have the free upgrade version sent to me, but Garmin still want me to pay. If I can get the unlock code cheaper that would be good.

It's the same DVD (with the version 10 maps), whether you get it slowly from Garmin, or immediately from a retailer. Essentially the DVD is 'free', but you can't use it until you input an unlock code. So the only difference is the cost of the unlock code.
