what gas units should we be using

we are currently using between 8 an 12 units of gas per day, which scottish power lead me to believe is alot. they tell me the average is about 4. can anyone confirm this?
we live in a 3 bed mid terrace(this includes a loft conversion). we only have the gas combi boiler for heating and hot water. the heating is on maybe 6 to 7 hrs a day depending and whatever hot water we use. we have an electric shower and cooker.
there is myself,my wife and 2 young children(4 and 1 yrs) living in the house.
the boiler settings are on about 3quaters and all the radiators are on thermostats set to 3.
it is currently costing about £3 per day which i think is high.
can anyone advise.

oh and we are on pre payment meters as it is a rented house.

thanx

  • Similar set up to you : 3 bed house , end terrace , 2 small kids , combi boiler for Water and Heating , Cooking is electric. Heating is on quite a lot at the moment as wife feels the cold and has it set to 22 degrees for around 10 hours per day .

We are using 4 units per day.
I was hoping it would be less than this , as the last 3 months with N power just cost £341 !

For you to be using 8-12 gas units and it costs £3 a day means you have a Metric meter. This means each gas unit is about 11kWh.

You can get Imperial Meters and on these a gas unit is approx 31kWh.

4 units a day would be very low consumption indeed(on a metric meter) about £1. I suggest SP were thinking you have an Imperial meter.

£3 a day in winter for a pre pay gas meter is certainly not expensive.

is it also not true that the national average for consumption is around 24,000 kWh?

if so then we are still way above that at around 40,000kWh.(per year)

Your average will not be 40000kwh per year. You are using your winter usage and projecting that for the rest of the year. In practice your summer usage (when the heating is off) drops dramatically and this will bring your average down. To give an example, I use approx 540kw per week in the winter, but only 120 kw in the summer when we only have the hot water on.
