Urgent housing benefit advise

After many years as being a single unemployed mum i have recently been offered a job that i have studied to get. It is only 10 hours a week for now but maybe more in future. my son currently lives with me and pays around 25 per week rent, rest is made up by housing benefit. However he recieved a pay rise around six month ago and i have just found out we should have informed them. We are now extremely worried, and can anyone advise as to wether we will have to pay the excess rent for the past six months.

Have they contacted you? if not then I think you are better than if they discover it. Go in with all the info they require and give them a change of circumstances form. It sounds as if there has been an overpayment but they should deduct this from your existing claim at a rate you can afford. I was overpayed at one time - there fault as I had informed them and they just paid me less until they had clawed it back - their term! In the letter they sent me - it did say if the amount deducted would cause me financial hardship to contact them - which implied they could be flexible about the amount and length of the repayment.

Hi, I assume you are the tenant and he is classed as a non-dependant (and that he's 18 or over?)

In these cases the amount deducted is based on bands of gross income, so you'll only have a problem if his income has increased beyond the band he was in when it was assessed.

These are the bands from April 2007:- (they will now have changed again from April 08)

(Ignore the fact that the deduction is listed twice)
