Where has my car NCD went, advice needed

I am looking for advice about my no claims discount for my car. I had 7 years in 2007 when i left elephant to go to budget. As the policyholder with budget I thought that I would gain the no claims discount, however I did not because I named my wife as the main driver, because our children were just born and she used my car more often at that point, so she gets it. The policy was set up with my 7 years NCD. I should have checked my policy closely at the time, but I thought as policyholder I would gain the NCD.
My problems arise with new insurance company who want proof of my NCD, i sent away my elephant 7 years NCD, but they want my information from this year. Budget say that the NCD is now my wifes. My wife has 10 years of her own elsewhere.
Does this mean that I have totally lost all my no claims discount, even though I have never made a claim.
Help please.

Can you get the 7 years transferred back to you, then reinstate your wife's own 10 years NCB (assuming it's still current)? If her (ie the ten year one) NCB is now out of date, then you may as well leave things as they are, and start to build your own again. (Which will save the inevitable admin fees if you do start getting the ncd transferred between policies).0

My wife has 10 years NCD in use with our other car. When getting my new insurance policy i only stated that I had 7 years NCD not 8.0

You now confuse the issue!
Do you have two proofs (in date) of NCB? (One for you and one for your wife? Both earned separately?)0 -
Yes my wife now has 2 NCB in date, one for 10 years and one for 8, she is only 31, so she is doing well!0

See if you can get one of them transferred to you.
If your new insurer won't entertain this, then it will probably work out much cheaper for you to find an insurer that is happy to transfer the full NCB to you, then cancel the new policy, and start again with the other insurer and your full NCB reinstated.0 -
Thanks for the advice0
