£300 for bounced check

I received a letter today from westcott credit services/nationwide for a debt of £300 (including charges from the debt collectors) for a bounced check, it started off as a charge of £25 then a charge of £20 on top per month ( as nothing was in the account ) the bounced check was caused by my money not clearing in time when the vets tried to cash it, but i payed the vets in full a week later and thought nothing of it as i rarely use the account anyways (used it 3 times in the 4 years i had it), they never made any contact to me about the account going further and further into debt, but now im wondering where i could go about this, im currently unemployed and cant afford to pay it off, could i get this wiped or anything else like that? thanks in advance
