I almost feel reluctant to share this... Get a 1995-1999 Nissan almera. You'll find a good en for under £800. There as reliable as an old sheepdog. Look out for rust on the rear arches tho. They don't look very nice but they drive and handle lovely and are surprisingly spacious.

A good honda civic alternative at a fraction of the price.
