Port Forwarding and static ip address

Hello all you technically minded geniuses, my husband wants to play Football manager 2008 online. It doesnt seem to be working and it suggests port fowarding and using a static ip address. AHHH! I tried going to my router buffalo wbmr-g54 and setting a new rule to open ports 10093 and 10094 but it still didnt work. So i'm wondering if i need to do the static thing, i have no idea how. If i pinged that port 10094 on one of those websites it says that the port cannot be found as connection timed out. As you can tell i dont know what i'm talking about i just want my hubby off my back and happily playing champ.

See if this helps you to configure your router.

What's your DNS server address got to do with port forwarding?

  • i have followed the instructions on that website but it still doesnt work, i'm therefor assuming i need to have a static ip address. if i follow the instructions on how to do thhis through the website it states that i need 2 dns server addresses. Hence i'm confused. it would just be lovely if things would just work,

You shouldn't need a static IP to play footy manager online.
Whenever you turn your wireless router on/off your ISP will give you a new IP address. As long as you are not acting as a 'server' in game, then you won't need to worry about that.

The problem most likely lies with the routers firewall blocking certain ports on your router. What this means, is information being sent to your computer, is being blocked not allowing you to connect.

    Have a looksie at this:

    http://www.fmformation.net/online-world/28693-fm-2008-how-play-online.html

    3. If you are using a router or a firewall then you need to open the ports 10093 and 10094 (UDP and TCP).

Finally, make sure windows firewall is set to allow connections through!

Change that, and your husband will be battling for relegation in no time!

    Hi pennypinchingmum,

you should not need a static address to get this working as most people in the world don't have access to this functionality. The game wouldn't sell too well if most the world couldn't use the online functionality.

Having read the web site that espresso linked you to it sounds like this should be working now.

Just to fill in a gap I noticed, on the Virtual Server page you should be putting the internet IP address of your hubby's PC in the drop down box labelled LAN IP. (You probably knew this already but I'm just checking). To find out your hubby's IP address run the 'ipconfig' command you mentioned earlier on his PC.

    Good luck

  • thanks i think i'm getting there, i've got the latest version and i think i've opened those ports, sorted out our norton firewall as we have windows firewall disabled but is there anyway i can check if the ports are open without looking through the game?

    Hi pennypinchingmum,

you can use a service called Shields Up to check your system for security vulnerabilities. This should 'port scan' you and tell you open ports.

This might not work if nothing is listening on those ports but its worth a try. Also, if your router detects it is being port scanned it might block the scan altogether before it even gets to try the mentioned ports.

You can use Sheilds Up by going to https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

    Good luck
