New charity

Options
Hi there,

I'm involved in starting a new charity (The Violet Trust) with some work colleagues in a bid to co-ordinate our fundraising efforts for cancer research and care charities. We were fortunate to get our charity number in December and the hard work of starting it up is just about done so we can concentrate on getting down to the business of fundraising.

I just wondered if anyone had advice of fundraising events or techniques that had proved successful and for help in establishing the charities name. We are all volunteers with health backgrounds and none of us seem to have the marketing knowledge that we need to promote the charity. Any advice or support would be much appreciated.

Lorna

    Hopefully you have a website.
The following things would be of use.
    http://www.buy.at
    http://www.everyclick.com
    http://google.com/adsense
There are many others I am sure other people would also be able to give advise.

Thanks for your response, we are in the process of putting the final touches to the website and have been using everyclick for the past month. The other websites I haven't checked but I'll have a wee look now, thank you very much!

    MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to the Small Biz & Charity Organisers board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

You should also find some useful information in the CHARITY stickies at the top of the board.

Only yesterday I was recommending the Apply Yourselves and Budget Yourselves free software available for download from FunderFinder - invaluable for those new to fundraising!

I'm really sorry to be negative and I know it's not encouraged on here, but I advise a lot of groups like yours. I know you have the best of intentions but....
You have started a new chairy in order to raise funds for exisiting, presumably well known, charities, thus placing another level of beaurocracy between you and the beneficiaries. Now, you find you don't know how to run the charity. Why didn't you just stick to running fundraising events as and when you had the inspiration and time?
If you are determined to continue with this, I think you need people on board, either as trustees or volunteers who can help you on the fundraising side. Otherwise, this is not going to be sustainable and you may as well close down now and stick to putting on events when you have time. You need to sell to them the idea of why would they help your charity when they can contribute (in time and/or money) to the ultimate beneficiary charities?
