Does getting your carpets treated with any kind of stain protection make a big difference if you have spills or anything?
We just had new carpets (80/20 wool twist if it makes a difference) fitted yesterday and didn't go for anything like that as my husband is convinced that they are worthless, claiming that you're basically just paying for the insurance policy that goes with a lot of the products + it would have cost an extra couple of hundred if the carpet supplier/fitter had done it... however today granny came to look after our toddler, she was only there for a couple of hours but spilt cranberry juice in one room and forgot to take her shoes off and put several big muddy footprints on another area of carpet. Most of it came up but I found that it it wasn't anywhere as easy as with the carpets in the last couple of places we've lived, there was still a hint of pink from the juice. Would a stainguard type of product have made a difference?

I would for the mess you've just cleaned up. But when you clean it, it takes the protection with it which means the rest of the carpet would be protected and the cleaned bit wouldn't.
Hubby sells carpets, he tells people not to bother with it, complete waste of moneyBulletproof0
