I have sent no email to this address (although it does bear a marked similarity to my own email address).

I'm worried that I've been infected by something, although I do keep my anti-virus software up to date, have Windows Defender, Spybot etc

its probabaly spam (but dont quote me on that) Id do a system scan on avg just to be on the safe side and run any spam (spybot) or cookie applications you have afterwards. one of these should flag it up if you have a problem. make sure all your updates are up to date first. (AVG anti spyware is ggod to)

I tend to agree ..... I may get one or two of these a year and just delete them with no problems. :j

Thanks - I'll give all my anti-spyware a run out.

But what would the point in spammers sending out emails like that? I can't see any point in it.

just like a normal spam email...if you reply or try to find out about the email they know its a used email..so then they bombard you with loads of emails. you did the right thing to ask for advice, and never replyto an email you think is suspect. They are very clever in making the email look like your own email address.
