Its not unidentifiable though, the machine can pinpoint exactly who that money belongs to.

The person who withdrew the money will complain to the bank about the discrepancy, the next registered user of the cashpoint wll be you and the atm camera will confirm this. They should already know that you have the money anyhow.
    Hope you get a reward!

Its great to know there are so many honest people around. I think we feel like this because we've all been down to our last penny and can imagine how the person whose lost the money will be feeling. Lets hope they appreciate the honesty of the OP.

I found £300 in a cashpoint a few years back, there was no receipt so i took it to the police. The person didn't claim it, so i got it a couple of days before i went to New York on holiday... :D

    I'd hand it in.

I work for the prosecution service and had a case like this recently.

The camera showed the guy arriving at the machine, putting the money in his pocket then putting his own card in to use his own account.

They found who he was by checking his card details. His defence was that it was the banks fault but the ruling was that the bank didn't make him keep the money knowing that it wasn't his.

and as Panda Pants said if not's claimed then it's yours...if you hand it to the cops that is

    Hi everybody

I managed to post this thread twice yesterday and couldn't work out how to delete it, so i seem to have two conversations going!

Anyway I wanted to update everyone.

I called the bank and they were absolutely useless. Apparently because of data protection there is no way of finding out who used the machine before me! Which i think is absolute crap - they must have a record of the account details so i don't se why they can't trace them. I told her i didn't want the persons details myself - I was happy for them to give them mine but she said there was nothing they could do. Nobody has been to the branch either.

I will just hand it in to the police station and hopefully someone will contact them for it back. I am so disappointed - I kept imagining the persons face when they got a call from their bank saying their money had been handed in.

That's why i didn't take my find to the bank. I knew that if they didn't find the person it would just have been profit for them. Could you even try an ad in the local paper? PObviously, don't be specific, something like "A sum of money was found in a cash-point (don't specify which) and handed to police, if you believe it's yours please contact them".

Oh how useless of them! I know for a fact that HSBC can tell who used the cash machine before/after as I went through all this with my mum. They explained that the machine keeps a tally of who requests money and how much, and if they fail to take the money then the machine swallows it back within 30-60 seconds, the money then goes to a seperate section of the machine and is recovered by staff when the machine is opened. Then they just credit it back to that persons account.

Were the police a bit more helpful?

Was he a complete moron? Which part of the law says "it was the bank's fault" is a defence for anything?

Everyone with an ounce of common sense knows that the Monopoly "bank error in your favour" is a myth.

Molly's bank are obviously complete idiots too. As CleosMum says it's the work of an instant for the bank to find out who transacted immediately before you. I'm assuming, Molly, that you did tell them you actually used the machine, rather than just found the money there and wandered off with it?
