I have just got a belkin router/modem and usb adaptor. Our main pc is at the repairers (never buy mesh!!) but in the meantime, I would like to make the laptop wireless, then when the other comes back link the 2 together. Now, I'm not completely thick, but the installation manual for the belkin is on disc, and the first step is disconnect all power!!, I therefore cannot read the flipping instructions!!, I have tried writing each step down, but am getting in a pickle, is there anyone here who has used this one and can give me an idiots guide to getting it connected? If something is written down in plain simple english without all the technical garb, I can usually manage to get it sorted, but reading this (or trying to) manual just keeps making me shout out HELP PLEASE!!! Hoping someone can help. Thank you.

Personally I'd ignore the "turn the power off" line - unless it requires removing the cover from the machine. There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't
In many cases it helps if you say where you are - someone with local knowledge might be able to give local specifics rather than general advice0 -
I have plugged the mains in, plugged the phone line into my adsl filter and into the router, and plugged the other cable into the router and into the pc. all the lights appear the be working but it will not connect to the internet? I also presume at some point you unplug the cable from the pc else it is not wireless?? Can anyone please help? Thank you0

I'd say get it working with the wire first - and then tackle the wirelessness
Can you see the router when you put in the address (it should tell you in the instructions what that default is) ?
Have you put the username and password into the router ?
Do you get an IP address on the PC (if it's 169.254.x.x that's bad) ?
Is there a test facility within the router ? (There usually is)
Is your PC set to dial the internet connection when off line ? You'll need to tell it to look for the internet via the LAN.There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't

From my experience with Belkin, you have to alway configure your router while connected to the router via ethernet and NOT wireless. The standard Belkin router ip address is " http://192.168.2.1/.0

Once you have configured your wireless router, you do NOT have to have any PC connected via ethernet, they can all connect via wireless and you access the router via a web browser with the default IP address.
However I always have my PC which I use for Downloading connected via ethernet, as it does make a diffence on speed depending on how much you download.0 -
thanks for all your replies, after spending almost an hour on the phone to Belkin, as the adsl data light will not light up, it appears that the router is faulty. have contacted the company I bought it from (on ebay), and I can return it at my cost for a replacement, or for a refund minus all the postage I have paid, so now my dilemma is do I get a replacement and it will cost me 7.00 to get it, or do I get a refund and loose 14.00 and have to buy it elsewhere. Really, really p'd off about the whole damn thing.0

If you paid for the item via Paypal I would report it to Paypal... Have a look at the ebay board for more help and ideas...0
