Defrag Problems

I used defrag on Windows XP for first time which took 6 hours.
The message at the end said that several files could not be defragnented and gave me a list.
What do I do now?
Advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Generally they are files in use. You could try doing it in safe mode

Dont worry too much, the rest of the drive will be tidied up!

Yeah and dont forget you should always to run a scandisk before a defrag when you are doing your very first defrag as any damaged sectors of disk will slow down the defrag process,, Double click my computer icon on desktop, right click Local disk C:\ then choose properties, then choose Tools Tab Click, Check now for error checking, put the two ticks in the boxes and click then click start then click yes, and scan disk will start when the PC is restarted.

Why Microsoft hid disk check (scandisk) this way I shall never know, but hey it works.
  • i reckon like all these safeguards .. defrag.. adaware..avast..ccleaner.. i run them all every day when i first log on .. each only take seconds or a couple of minutes .. if you do them very regularly. Good housekeeping !!

Actually if you use NTFS file system, many recommend that a defrag about once per YEAR is sufficient if you feel it is necessary at all. More damage/wear is caused by over defragging and NTFS just doesn't require it. Do a 'google' to get some info.

Get a decent defragger like Diskeeper. A "lite" version is available for free here or a 30 day trial version of the full product here.

At the current $ exchange rate, you may consider it worthwile paying for the full version. I did several years ago and have never regretted it. Best defragger on the market, IMHO.
