Problems installing wireless

Hi,
My mother min law recently has bought a speedtouch wireless router from Tiscali.
She has a laptop from work, a Compaq Evo n110.
I have tried to install the router but can get it to work.
It says to initially connect using the ethernet cable supplied but when i connect the cable the ethernet light does not light up.
When i go into device manager, it says that the ethernet controller drivers are uninstalled although no-one has done this.
The Wlan light stays orange, the dsl goes green and the internet light goes green.
As the ethernet light doesn't light up, the installation cannot proceed so therefore she has no internet at the minute and i can't fix anyhting from her house.
I have a 3com 11g wireless pc card that i was going to give her to use to connect to her router but i can't get anything to install.
When i plug in the card, i thought it would recognise it and try to install new hardware but nothing happens.
I have installed the drivers from a disc but it doesn't seem to recognise that the card is inserted. It may have something to do with the ethernet controller problem as when it is removed, the unplug or eject hardware window shows an ethernet controller.
Has anyone else had these problems?
Would really appreciate help as i talked her into getting wireless!!!

Sort out the Ethernet first and proceed from there, install the drivers etc. You really need to configure the router via Ethernet before moving on to the wireless set-up and encryption. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
thanks but how do i sort out the ethernet!!
i have downloaded this: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=uk&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=96308&prodNameId=97137&swEnvOID=20&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=36499 but not sure if it is the right thing.
if anyone knows where to get the correct drivers i'd love to know!0 -

Have you tried Windows key + Pause, Hardware, Device Manager, expand Network Adaptors, highlight your network adaptor, then update driver. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

thanks.
the o/s is windows 2000, is that the same as me or should i go for the 98 drivers?0 -
Legacy NIC, so the win98 would do judt fine. The millenium drivers would do as well there should be no difference to the card operation, then I never supported millenium either.0
