New Car - Have I been ripped off?

Oh dear....the saga continues, I just booked the car mentioned below in for a 60K service and CAM belt change and I also mentioned the oil temperature light had been flashing. I initially mentioned this to the garage that I bought it from a couple of weeks after I bought it and they said it wasn't an issue, just to keep an eye on the gauge and that the cars were 'over sensitive'. The garage that's doing the service initially thought the head gasket had gone but on performing some tests can't find a crack, they're sending it off for specialist testing but said they're had this issue on an Audi A2 1.4 before and there wasn't a crack but the problem returned over the next few months - they eventually had to replace the engine..! The care was bought at Easter so it's still within it's 3 months warranty, and I also purchased an extension for 1 year. I'm worried - what should I plan to do, do I really have any legal rights from the initial garage I bought it from?

Hello! Right I'm not sure if this is the right forum for me but if I don't get any answers that will be a sign..!

I bought a X reg Audi A2 from a private dealership recently because I thought it would offer more protection than buying privately.

When I first drove the car I noticed the started motor made a weird noise, when I took it back the dealer said it was under warranty but the noise was nothing to worry about. I took the car to another garage and they thought the noise wasn't normal and changed the unit under the warranty - leaving me with a £30 bill as the warranty only went up to £36 per hour.. I'm stuck between my dealer and the garage on that one...is it fair to say the warranty was missold to me?

When my garage was under the car they notice one of the tyres was bald, the CV joing was split on the otherside (MOT failure) and a small oil leak around the engine which they couldn't source without expensive investigation.

Sorry this is taking so long...

Between this time the dealership took the car back to replace the water squirters which didn't work, they also said they'ed sort out the tyre and CV whatsit.

There is condesenation in one of the headlights.

Do I have any come back to this garage or is it a case of buyer beware???

Legally you are responsible for tyres and should have checked yourself. It would also have got you a replacement tyre before buying. If the police pull you up it's a big fine and points.

Not much of a problem for a trained mechanic to replace and regrease etc. If you insisted the car came with a full 12 months MOT before agreeing to purchase the problem should not be there.

Small leaks, undesirable, but not really a problem.

Sounds like they're sorting out the problems to me? You could perhaps ask for hire car expenses or have asked for a courtesy car, but if you managed without it there's no real consequential loss, and you probably signed an agreement waiving any such rights anyway.

Yeh it was a bit of an impulse buy - I know next time I buy a car to be a lot more cautious and check much more than I did this time round (the colour).

On the bright side the problems you describe don't sound particularly bad and it sounds like they're getting sorted.

Actually if the tyres are defective at time of purchase, the dealer is breaking the law selling a dangerous vehicle.

The oil leak you're gonna have to live with and with the washer jets, is there actually any water in the washer bottle? That's a weekly check that is up to the driver to do so if there isn't any, that's your problem.

At the end of the day, you bought a 9 year old second hand car and its going to have faults. The only unacceptable fault is the tyre.
  • Condensation in headlamps is a common problem, the usual solution is to remove the headlamp, disassemble, and replace the seals.

The starter motor should not have been changed under warranty - it should have been changed because it was faulty. You shouldn't have had to pay anything.
