Help! Phone rings throughout the call

I was wondering if anyone may be able to help.

Thnaks to this board I grabbed some a set of home phones (Philips SE 63500) in October 2007.

They have been reliable but now they pick up background noise very clearly and also, intermittently, when people call me the phone keeps ringing throughout the conversation- it is deafening! So we have to hang up and start again - this appears to clear it.

Am I doing something wrong? Philips said they haven't heard of the problem (but were very helpful). Has anybody experienced this at all?

have you tried another phone in case its a fault on the line

Yes, I used to have another phone and it seemed fine. I've been in touch with Philips and they said that the melody needs to complete - which I understand but the phone carries on ringing on that handset and not the spare one.
