Refund car insurance after renewal?

Hi MSE!

My car insurance recently renewed automatically, without any notification from the company providing the insurance.

I was hoping to change my insurance as I had found cheaper quotes, but now that it has automatically renewd, am I able to claim a cancellation and a refund, since it was renewed without my consent?

Thanks,

Ajhayter

    Yes.

(Though they may point you to where they did in fact inform you about this). In any case you can always cancel and get a refund. (Less pro rata for the cover you have had plus any cancellation fees)

Though they wouldn't have renewed it till your previous one expired. (Meaning you remained insured)

This will have been on your confirmation letter, from last year, where they'll say something along the lines of "we will renew your insurance unless you tell us otherwise."

If they're one of the more enlightened insurers, they will have also mentioned this on the renewal notice they sent you this year.

What has happened is that giving them the 16 digit number from your credit or debit card will usually grant the insurer a Continuous Payment Authority, whereby they can charge your card whenever they like (but will usually only charge upon renewal.) Think of this as like a direct debit which you can only cancel by contacting the billing company instead of from your account.

Ring them up and see if you're within the cancellation period for the insurance, and ensure you are covered for any period between when last year's insurance ceased, and when you can get cover from another insurer.

So they must have sent you a renewal notice, and that would have told you that your policy would auto-renew
