Help with Halifax

Ok so basically my problems started with a real petty failed direct debit that I thought I had enough cash to pay for. So anyway the bank charged me for it failing and it came at a time when I had just lost my job.
I failed to make another payment so again another charge incurred. I managed to deposit about £20 into my account but by the time the next month rolled over, another charge was added so now im jobless, skint and have a £140 charge to my Halifax account.
I again managed to borrow and save a further £20 to bring it down to £120 and since then I have been bombarded (harrassed more like) from them telling me I need to pay the full amount or i'll get no credit for 6 years and that this is really damaging my credit score.
I have tried to explain my situation time and time again and advised I could pay when I could but I cannot afford the full sum just yet. But I still get call after call, everyday of the week, even sunday mornings with Halifax's really aggresive tactics to get me to pay the full amount. They tell me I can no longer pay smaller amounts due to me "missing" a few payments.
This is really getting to me and I sometimes do not answer the phone now when I see the 0870 number show.
Any advice for what I can do?
Sorry its a long post and I hope its in the right section.

Yes, make an appointment to talk to an account manager at your local branch ASAP. Explain all the details to them and together you may find a solution by means of an authorised overdraft or some other plan. I think you'll find the calls might stop then.
You shouldn't be dealing with a call centre for a specific problem like this.

Bluey why did you not cancel the D/D when you knew that you had lost your job with little or no money coming in?

Yeah I know, I should have double checked everything. Anyways to cut a long story short. My DD was for about £65 and I had £61 in my account. I thought I had enough cash to cover the DD and I didnt cancel it as I didnt intend to be out of a job for another month.
