connecting TV/HD/surround?

Got the following:
Sony 32" D3000 LCD - 2 HDMI
Toshiba EP30 HDDVD - 1 HDMI
Sony SS1100 surround sound - 2 HDMI in, 1 HDMI out
When i go into the tellys' setup and choose "find HDMI devices" it doesnt see the HD-DVD player...? I was under the impression that HDMI carries video and audio. For some reason, i cant get any sound thru the surround, just video. Its ok when i go direct DVD>TV

Thats because current home cinema in a box type surround systems like yours although having HDMI, these are switchers only and do not process audio and it will only pass through. You would have to use the optical/coaxial input (if it has one) for surround.
If you wanted a AV Receiver to take advantage of HD audio from your HD-DVD player, the cheapest currently would be the Yamaha DSP-AX 761which until recently could be had for £199 from Richersounds.0 -
that would explai why there is no sound - bah!
Will order a optical input for the HD > surround sound and i coax for the tv> surroud sound
