visa's for india from my experience take a few hours..
turn up at the embassay in the morning and wait your turn.
same day visa.

they do some in other places as well

I think Voyager2002 was referring to the recent experiment of only accepting tourist visa applications from preferred travel agents, or issuing a max of 50 visa's per day, now abandoned for the time being after a big drop in tourism and lots of disgruntled customers.
