I am curently looking for a car for my wife. Thing is she keeps changing her mind every week and is doing my head in.
Now I am told she has finally decided on a 1.3L 5Door Toyota Yaris. The thing is I was hoping to spend £5000 on second hand, hopefully with low mileage and not too old.
We went to a Toyota dealer but they did not have that many Toyota Yaris. The Sales Guy advised us not to buy at the moment but to come back Mid September after the new number plates are out. He said dealers always get loads more cars when the new registrations come out and prices of second hand cars tend to fall around this time.
I was wondering how true is this. Is it worthwile me waiting a liitle bit?

As soon as the new reg comes out then there will be a greater availability of used cars as people part-ex their current car for a new one and yes prices will fall slightly but not to a massive extent.

Unless you are in a massive rush then yes it is probably worthwhile leaving things for a couple of weeks.

there'll also be a selection of '1 year old' pre registered cars that they'll have to sell alot cheaper as well

???? - most pre-registered cars are usually sold and out the door within 1m of being registered, or are you referring to the change of reg, making them seem old, because thats 6m now, so you might technically get what you could refer to as a '6m old' car

but honestly, very few people are worried about the change of reg, and having new cars on the 1st of the month now, its not the oneupmanship that is used to be - people are more worried about loosing a couple of days RFL if the dont pick up on the 1st of the month, rather than the prestige associated with having a new car

also used prices wont drop that much, £200, if that - its just the fact the dealership will have more trade-ins availabe, so they work on the premise, that with a better selection, you are more likely to buy something, rather than feel you are having to settle for second best, from their current stock iyswim

sorry Im probably having a 'blonde' moment but can you explain what 'a couple of days RFL' means please. I am looking around for a car just now and have never come accross this term.

    thanks

Historically the 'best' time to buy a used car is around November/December.

Darker nights, people saving £$£$ for Christmas, not a smuch activity on the forecourt, with NEW registrations held 'till January, big companies clearing fleets to generate a good cash flow, for year end accounts - all add up to a better than average price drop.

So, if you can hold on a bit longer......

Don't think wife can hold that long. Problem is she wants it sooner rather yhan later before summer is over.

currently looking at buying a BMW - they have their own finance called BMW Select but I can buy this using my own money from an account. I was thinking of buying this on my credit card and getting the airmiles (and of course paying it all off when I get the bill).

I always thought it's good to use other people's money, but with interest rates low, aren't I better off using my own capital?

    ideas please.
