DLA care Q

Can you still qualify for the middle care component if you need care during the day to perform housework/make sure you are ok, but are able to make meals for yourself?

    Hi Kristine690,

    Welcome to MSE.

Unfortunately no one can answer your question with a yes or no, it is much more complex than that.

The decision maker will take into account several factors in deciding your claim. However, as a broad outline:
    Highest rate
61061 The highest rate is awarded to people who are so severely disabled physically or
mentally that they satisfy the day condition (61052) and the night condition
    (61053)1.
    1 s 72(4)(a)
    Middle rate
61062 The middle rate is awarded to people who are so severely disabled physically or
mentally that they satisfy the day condition (61052) or the night condition (61053)1.
    1 s 72(4)(b)
    Lowest rate
61063 The lowest rate is awarded to people who are so severely disabled physically or
    mentally that

    1.
they need attention from another person for a significant portion of the day in

connection with their bodily functions (whether during one period or a number
    of periods)1 or
    2.

they cannot prepare a cooked main meal for themselves even if they have the
ingredients2 (provided they are 16 years old or over).

The day condition is satisfied if a person is so severely disabled physically or
mentally that, they require from another person
    1. frequent attention throughout the day in connection with bodily functions1 or
    2. continual supervision throughout the day in order to avoid substantial danger
    to themselves or others2.

Apologies for the lack of editing on the above, I have copied the information straight from the Decision Makers Guide.

You should also note that requiring help with cleaning is not one of the criteria taken into account for any of the DLA rates, though making sure you are ok (not a danger to yourself etc) is one of the considerations.

Anything else you need to know, just ask x

yes but if doing the housework could be dangerous or difficult due to your disability then that would count as care??

DLA care is awarded for personal care, not housework. If you need help with making meals it may qualify you for lower care rate. Middle rate DLA is for more severely affected people.
