smart trousers, shirt & tie for the first few days; then smart trousers & open necked shirt or open necked shirt and jumper for at least the first month.

after that, you'll have a good idea of how the organisation functions and your team's role in it.

Whatever you do, no jeans unless there's a reason / day & always clean, decent shoes.

Give them a call and ask the chap/girl that answers the 'phone. Explain that you want to make a good impression and are looking forward to working there.

Either that or hang about the office at closing time (you do run the risk of getting arrested if it's a dodgy area !)
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical

So when you went for the interview, what were the other chaps wearing in the office? That should give you an idea of what is expected.

If you wore a suit to the interview and received the advice about "not too smart" perhaps that was a hint that the suit was indeed more than they would think was appropriate.

I didnt go into the offices

Its in the creative industry, so dress code would suggest smart/casual, I would leave jeans and trainers for a while until you suss out what is expected.
Although when I joined a new media company, I was told to leave the suit at home as I looked too stiff , and wear jeans and tees.
