Phone Dead but internet ok??

Any suggestions please? I can get on-line ok but my set of DECT phones don't work - no dialing tone. Is it possible for it to be a line fault if the net is up and running?? Phones were fine till an hour ago!

I have had in the past the fault when I could get online with my Broadband and could not make a telephone call and it was a line fault.

Check/swop your filters .

if you have a 1 line fault then it is possible for adsl (internet) to continue working, though possibly slower than usual, and with a lot of crc errors, the phone requires both wires of the pair to be connected in order to work.

totally possible for one to work and not the other. I've had it and they simply knocked something out at the exchange.

As others have said try this
1) get a wired phone, plug it into your filter
2) get a wired phone, plug it directly into a normal line without filter (you will hear an inteferance and it may drop your broadband, but you should still hear a dial tone)
3) unplug all extensions in the house and try phone in the master socket
4) if newer wiring around 1990ish on, your master socket will be about the size of a regular mains socket, unscrew the two screws and the face plate pops off, behind is another BT socket, plug your phone in there. (dont worry there are no mains voltages that can harm you, although don't lick the socket as there is 50v there which will startle you!)

If all thsoe fail to give a DT, then there is most likely a line fault - could well be caused by the snowy weather where damp can get into connections, phone your ISP and or BT to get a line test done (150 is free and a good start)

in a rush as a boy I stripped a phone extension cable with my teeth, forgetting the other end was plugged in - ouch!

I recommend a voltmeter these days!

Many thanks for all the above. What a great website this is.

I had tried most of your advice before I posted here, but in desperation I did that extreme techie advanced operation - switched the base station off at the mains and switched it on again. Yes.. you're way ahead of me. Working again! Think I'll patent that.
