I wish to connect my Win98SE computer to my Router/Modem - can someone please tell me if a Cat 5e straight patch cable is correct?

Should be fine. Assuming the computer does have an ethernet port. (some people in the past have tried to force an ethernet cable into the dial up modem's port).

Simply means to "patch in" different equipment to route signals through. It's a bit superfluous as that's exactly what you want it for. The only thing you'd want to avoid is when they call it a crossover cable because that's when you're connecting directly from computer to computer without an intermediate router etc. You can think of it as essentially meaning "ordinary" and not everyone uses it because it's assumed that all cables are that unless stated otherwise.

Cat5e cables are as cheap as chips, I bought a 3m one today from my local computer fair for £2.50... PC World charge £19.99 for them
There's someone in my head, but it's not me

Try somewhere like TLC branches all over, 5m for £1.99+vat, also stock other bits and pieces but not a huge selection.
    Move along, nothing to see.
