Replacing old gas fire for 'hole in wall fire' - pipe and cost query

Hi,
I am looking at replacing an old gas fire with an ‘in the wall’ gas fire, this includes knocking away the old mantel piece. The pipes currently run parallel with the skirting board and along the back of the mantel piece.
I have been told by someone that it could be expensive to have the pipes altered to run behind the chimney which is what will be required for a ‘hole in the wall’ fire.
Has anyone done anything similar? Does anyone know if this would cost a small fortune?
Will a gas man charge for giving us a quote?
Thanks

Hi - we had a 'hole in the wall' fire put in a year ago.
The company charged £200 for installation, like you we had the gas pipe running parallel with the skirting board, so this included moving the pipe to behind the wall so it was invisible. We didn't have a mantelpiece to remove though, just a hearth.
Of course you then have to have your wall replastered, so we got their recommended plasterer in who did it for £120. Then you have to redecorate the wall of course! But it has to be done really, as with the pipe showing it would look rubbish and spoil the effect of the new fire.
PS They don't usually charge for giving a quote.0 -
Just had a hole in the wall fire fitted properly (2weeks ago)
You will need a survey before fitting the fire which may cost around £20 (they do a smoke test and other things)
You may also need the chimney swept just to be sure and you may need a flue liner (which I believe cost around £150-£200)
Hopefully you wont need the flue liner though (i didnt)
Me and the old man had to chisel the hole out exactly beforehand however and do the brickwork/plastering
For fitting the fire and laying new pipes under the floorboard and connecting up I paid £180
That was for three hours work....just to give you some idea0 -
Excellent, thank you for the comments, I have a bench mark cost now.
Luckly I have a plasterer in the family!
I will get ringing for quotes.0
