Help a complete gardening newbie?

  • When I started in my garden i too had no idea. But I got second hand The Complete book of Gardening by Alan Titchmarsh and nabbed Monty Don's Weekend Gardening from the back of dad's bookcase (which he didn't even know he'd got!) I have to say that between those 2 books it helped me get started. For me I started slow and small.

The first year I just dug over the flower beds. Then I bought some bedding plants and popped those in. Then once you get gardening it's surprising how many people you know also garden and they'll be happy to offer advice and give cuttings, surplus stock. I've planted all the plants given to me. It all looks a mess but I know that I can dig them up and plant them elsewhere when I have a clear idea. I never see the garden as 1 big project, just small steps at a time, and it's so easy to change things.

    Good look.

    Hi

take it gently in the first instance. You need to take a year to learn about your garden before you start shifting too much. Find out where the sun shines in winter, where the much needed shade is in summer? How does the wind blow?

On my plot I can be wearing a strappy t-shirt at one end, then have to pile on a t-shirt, and fleece when I walk to the other end, if the wind is blowing from the west or east, but in winter, that same area thaws out whilst the hotter end remains frozen all day.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
