NUS drops opposition to tuition fees

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/7330231.stm

not quite sure what to make of this - i guess you have to pick the fights you can win and this one was lost years ago (sadly). something has to be done about higher education funding with such drammatic increases in student numbers.... but the suggestion of £8000 a year in fees has to be madness.... i know they're higher in the US but at least you know well in advance and parents start savings funds at birth!!

my recommendation - go to uni in scotland where the fees are still capped (who does cover the extra cost of that btw?!)! (completely impractical and not much help, but costs at english universities seem to be spiralling!)

Scottish costs are taken from other public services. But the SNP seem to have a special money tree meaning they can afford everything, so maybe I'm missing something.

NUS are rubbish anyway. Have they ever done anything good?

in my experience they are quite an ineffective group......... but they did support the lecturers' strike which effectively allowed it to go to a point where universities compromised (admittedly rubbish for students, but as i hope to end up teaching in a university, should make my pay that extra 1% more in real terms ;))

The strike didn't really effect me, but did it not prevent some final year students from getting their results and graduating? My university isn't affiliated with NUS so they have nothing to do with me. Thank goodness. Not only do they rip off the university they are pointless.

And if the NUS is now ineffective (it used not to be), your post perfectly illustrates why this has come about.

    Doubt it.

I'm happy to be in a university not affiliated with the NUS (U of Glasgow).
