Hi there,
Can anyone shed some light on this query for me!
What does it mean when a property for sale says 'Entry by arrangement'? Not viewing by arrangement though.
Also if it says mains water & electricity but private drainage what does this entail?
Any help would be great thanks

private drainage will most likely mean septic tankHave you tried turning it off and on again?0 -
I think entry by arrangement may refer to the entry date which may indicate the sellers may not have bought yet so are looking to sell first and work dates around the purchasers requirements.0

Thanks to all who replied to my query. I understand now about entry by arrangement, we are in good position as we are first time buyers and do not have property to sell either! Does septic tank prove to be expensive?0

My sister and my mother & father have a septic tank and it isn't really too bad but you have to be on the ball with blockages and overflowing etc, they reckon not to use bleach etc down your toilet for some reason too.
I just phoned my dad and he can't remember how much it is...he's only lived there 25 or so years!!LOL He said £350 rings a bell but not sure if that was for the tank or not..sorry I can't be of any more help.You may walk and you may run

We've not long left a cottage with a septic tank. It needed emptied every couple of years @ about £100 ish a time. And yes you need to keep an eye on it for blocakges & stuff. There are enzymes (or something like that) that breakdown waste in tank so bleach is a no no as this kills them. Also coloured toilet paper is not good for them. If you move to a house with a septic tank make sure your council is aware & adjusts your council tax bill accordingly - you shouldn't need to pay full water allowance if you have a tank - this at least offsets the amount needed to emplty the tank.Debts 07/12/2021

Thanks for that clootiesMum and Poppyolivia that makes sense now and i will ask about the council tax bill. This is also a cottage so will remember about not using bleach or coloured toilet paper.

if you know the postcode you can find its council tax bracket and what the rate is for your area online.

you can also find a whole host of other info without leaving the house these days, my favorit is the ability to see how far the nearest dsl exchange is.0 -
Septic tanks are not a problem at all.
I can't remember when we last had mains drainage - at least 15 years and four houses ago. We started off being super careful, but as the years have gone by we have lapsed.
Now we treat it exactly the same as we would mains drainage and have never had to have a tank emptied. We have had the occasional blockage, but we had blockages with mains sewers as well and nothing that a set of drain rods won't deal with.
Any potential cost is usually outweighed by the savings on the water bill.
Certainly don't let it put you off.0 -
I wouldn't want to buy a house with a tank of poo in the garden that needed dealing with.
I like to know when I've pressed that handle it's "bye bye"
They say when you buy a house you should be looking at how you'd sell it.... so having a big tank of poo would put off some potential buyers in the future when you come to sell.0 -

We have no handle...but then I certainly don't want my valuable assets going "bye bye". Our composting toilet is invaluable for producing rich compost in which to grow our munchy crunchy summer veg!:D0
