Sky Multiroom

Okay...we have Sky+ in the living room, but I want to get multiroom so that I can watch the sport and movie channels.

We used to have normal Sky in the living room, but after we upgraded to Sky+, the old box was relegated to the garage and is now gathering dust. I want to use this for the multiroom.

I'm prepared to pay the £10 a month but I'm not too keen on the setup fee of £60 odd quid.

Here are the questions that I have:

  • Can I get an elctronics guy in to set it up so I don't have to pay the £60 fee?
  • If I can, how can I get a viewing card? Do I just phone them up or something?
  • Will I need to buy an LNB-thingy or will I not as we already have Sky+?
  • Can I use the old box for the multiroom without having to buy a new one?
  • Is there a way to haggle with Sky so that I can get it smaller than £10 a month? Because I don't think it's possible to say "I'm gonna leave if you don't give me a better deal" if we aren't even with them :p
Cheers :D

    Hi Saltire

    You have two options:

You should be able to get any local installation engineer to install the cabling to the new room for you. You can then plug the old Sky box in, then contact Sky who can sell you a 'freesat' card for £20.

This is your cheapest option, it will give you the free to air channels.

Alternatively, you can get the box installed and then start paying Sky £10 a month for multiroom and then they'll send you a new card. This way you'll get your main subscription but in two rooms.

You will have to keep a phone line connected using multiroo, Sky are very fussy about it.;)

Yes, it's there way of knowing that box boxes are in the same home and not with someone else bagging a cheap subscription.

If you have a Quad LNB that is one with 4 outputs, just get some satellite grade co-ax a couple of F-connectors make up the lead and connect from the LNB to the Sky box and away you go.

Then give Sky a call telling them you have this other box and you want to make it multi-room, they'll ask for details of the box and then send out a viewing card.

Some old Sky+ installations only had LNBs with two outputs, if this is the case you need to change it for one with more outputs.

Thanks everyone. I just checked our sat dish and it looks like a quad-LNB as two of the four thingys are being used.

BexTech: I have the Co-ax cable still in the packet in the box (don't know how it got there) .I also have some UV Digital cable (about 1.5m) that was in the box but I don't know what it's for, can you help?

Do you want multiroom to watch a different channel (wife downstairs with movie, you upstairs with football) or just to watch same sky upstairs as down.
If latter then get the mouse device and second remote. Run a coax cable from rf out.
If you touch the dish DO NOT MOVE IT as sky will charge to reset.

You don't have to pay Sky, you can use a local dish installer, who'll likely charge £20 to re-align it.

The short cable if it's co-ax too may have been the installers short lead to connect between the LNB and signal meter to check the alignment.

If you have long enough length of the co-ax to reach the dish to your re-located box, then yes just a case of connecting it up. However you do need to be careful not to move the dish out of alignment.
