Hi bamberbamboo, hope you can get another tec to to take a look. To get the photos and also the hard drive recovered you will need a utility call Spinrite, from Steve Gibson, at www.grc.com
It does what it says on the tin.0 -
Or a usb hdd caddy for around £10
i'm guessing bamber could do with a friend with a big box of spare bits (junk box) to get it up and running..Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -

a bargain is only a bargain if you really need it!0 -
tonyhague I'm with you on this " i guess if the computer shop claim they can do nothing with it, then its a really, really old pc, or a bad shop." It must be really not cost effective for them not to be able to squeeze any new parts, so adding their old hdd to a usb box and plugging it into their new or newer base unit.GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time.0

Hi Guys, both pc repair shops have said same thing, they can re-build with new hard-drive but we really want the old photos off, they have tried our hard drive in another base unit nothing happened and tried the other base unit hard drive in ours and it worked so it definately has had it and its clicking, so now looking for a good reasonably priced company to retrieve the data,a please & thank you is all it takes :wave:0

If the drive is clicking, that isn't a good sign at all. Attempting to recover the data may well damage the drive further, so if you're serious about getting the data back I would not let anyone else "try" to get the data back (i.e. no techie friends, no repair shops) and send the drive off for proper data recovery.
There are a number of companies that specialise in data recovery, like this one:

Might be worth asking for a quote - I would imagine that they would be in the region of several hundred to a few thousand pounds.
Hope you manage to get what you want back. :-)0
