Aga/rayburn or standard cooker and boiler

If the kitchen is open to the sitting room, an AGA/Rayburn might well heat the sitting room too - especially if you have double-glazing. But they're well insulated and designed to retain the heat, rather than pump it out, so it will only be a low gentle heat.
You'll be keeping the wood burning stove though ....? In which case, any heat given off by the range won't be critical to the lounge .... and you say that the stove heats the whole house ....?
So it really comes down to the price of heating by oil or heating by electricity. Sorry, I can't help with that one, but you're looking only at comparing the cost of cooking with a range or cooking with an electric cookerWarning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -

Actually you are spot on. That is exactly what I am asking but it took this entire thread to realise that....sigh...:rolleyes2 .
I know it will be swings and roundabouts with the heating as we will save somewhat with economy 7 but we dont have the controlability of a boiler atm which we will gain.
perhaps i should have asked how much more expensive it is to run a range to a cooker0 -
Hi,
I've just come across this thread whilst looking for something else and there were a couple of points that seemed have been missed out of the conversation. However it was a while ago so I assume you've made your decision and have/haven't gone the Rayburn route. What did you decide?0 -

I'd also be interested to know what you decided. We're buying a house that has an oil-fired Rayburn in the kitchen, with an open fire in the lounge. There is no gas. We will have to gut and re-fit the kitchen so are trying to decide on whether or not to keep the Rayburn or replace with an oil-fired boiler. We have looked into GSHPs (as the garden is about 1/4 acre) but this won't solve all the problems (plus we may not be able to afford it, esp with the underfloor heating to go with it).
The open fireplace will probably end up as a woodburner - how easy is it to link these into the heating/hot water?
Thanks in advance.0
