Different sections of the market. On average the people who whinge about vibration are the one who buy new cars so the manufactures pay attention to what they say, the people who whinge about the cost of the £600 bill are the ones who buy 3 or 4 year old cars and so are of limited interest to the manufacturers

Yes, I agree. Also, selling new cars is all about making the first impression. I've driven hire cars with good first impressions, but after 3 days they're just another car. The manufacturers have to make that good impression on the test drive.

whereas timing chains never fail and never need renewing.
Actually cam chains do fail... but unlike cam belts, they don't snap suddenly and you get warning (sound) when it wears out.

Also, cam chain lasts over 100,000 miles for most cars.

There are some models which bad cam chain design. But in general, they are far better than cam belts.
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.
  • Wouldn't have a car with DMF, only have proper automatics nowadays, not automated manuals (with whatever clever sounding name they can dream up).

On another forum i read that for example the DMF alone on a shogun is £1500 approx, thats just ridiculous,i've been a diy motorist for some 35 years and never replaced a flywheel yet, and that includes over 20 years with diesels.

On the subject of cambelts, i don't see the problem, if you do your homework when buying a car, you'll find that some vehicles have very reasonable cambelt replacement charges, a sight easier to change than a timing chain anyway.

Not all makers turn their customers over.
