I have always been under the impression that when bags are weighed at check-in, those weights are purely for calculation of excess baggage charges if they are needed.
Airlines use a standard figure for the weight of each passenger,I had thought that they would use a similar system for baggage. This would vary from route to route, but with experience this could probably produce a fairly accurate figure.
Any airline check-in staff out there ? (T5 need not apply !)0

            I know they do this!
I travelled from manchester to Stansted (air berlin) and my baggage was spot on (24 kilos)
I then took a flight (ryan air) from Stansted to Croatia and my bag suddenly weighed 28 kilos.
 I was charged - I couldnt believe it!0

Thomas Cook long-haul this summer has 15kg weight restriction. They want a huge £25 per bag to increase to 20kg.
This annoys me no end. It is the weight of the passengers that uses the fuel. I am only 56kg (9st) so I should get more luggage allowance than the people who weigh twice what I do.:rotfl:0

That is actually a reasonably valid point, why should you pay the same fare as someone of 20 stone ?0

This has been discussed by airlines in the past. It will never happen as people will say that it infringes their human rights, embarrassing passengers by wanting to know what there weight is. In fact, Northwest Airlines make you buy another seat if you are over a certain weight.moonrakerz wrote: »That is actually a reasonably valid point, why should you pay the same fare as someone of 20 stone ?The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.0

Quite simply if you need to ensure you are both under the weight restrictions, then make sure you pack your girlfriends / wifes bags for her.
Remove her 17 dresses and matching shoes apparently required for a weekend trip, the family-size packs of shampoos / conditioners, travel irons (plural), hairdryers, complete works of Tolstoy and the lucky horseshoe, and I guarantee you will be comfortably under the weight limit.
We need some new cases for our hols, as ours are getting old now.
Hubby wanted to get medium sized ones, to keep me within the weight limit:rotfl:0
