Prevent mould on Bathroom ceiling

Don't have any mould .... do have a high pressure in-line extractor fan - and the two things are linked!
As others have commented ... most of the extractors from B&Q etc are pathetically underpowered. You need one which is timed to run on for a few minutes after bathing / showering to make sure the bathroom area is dry. And one which shifts around 250 cu mtrs per hour. So it gets shut of the steam 'in flight' and stops it condensing .... which is where all the problems come from.
Some of these suck the suds off you .. so save the need of a towel!

Although more expensive humidistat fans are better than normal extractor fans that run from a light (or are manually switched on) as they automatically switch on when humidity levels are high. If there are trickle vents on the window ensure that they are always open - if you dont have trickle vents you could retro-fit to try and improve air circulation.0

The bathroom in my house, which I self built in 1977, does not have a window. However, it does have a good sized extractor fan(6" at least). I can honestly say that there has never been any condensation, either on the the mirror or the fully tiled walls. In the previous house that I built, we had an opening window in the bathroom, but no extractor fan. The walls always had a problem with condensation. The bathrooms were the same size in both houses.Enough said, I think.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
Also remember2 Things: 1.Make sure the loft over the bathroom is insulated properly so you are not getting any cold spots. 2. Make sure that the extractor fan is not linked to the light. the major failure is that if you shower during the day, it won't come on. Have one that is independent;ly switched and get in the habit of using it.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

My friend has an extractor in her kitchen that seems to activate at certain humidity levels - are these around or can they be 'wired into' a normal extractor?IT Field Service Engineer, 20 years with screwdriver and hammer

I don't know if anyone's still following this thread but I came across it so I thought I'd add in my bit...
We've had a problem with mould in our bathroom for some years and after trying pretty much all of the options above I was coming to accept that we'd just have to live with it... Then, about 6 months ago I came across a sanitisation product called RBT which claimed to stop mould as well as be environmentally friendly etc... Anyway, I gave the spray a go and it hasn't come back since - that was 6 months ago! Just wiped it over and that was that... expecting it to come back one day but still got plenty of spray left in the cupboard waiting for it
The company I got it from was Pro-mats. You should be able to find them on Google...
Hope that helps someone...0 -
Hopefully the OP has it sorted now, your advice is good to stop mould, but does it cut out the source of the problem...condensation?0
