1st Birthday Present

I don't post very often so I hope nobody minds but things are beyond tight for us at the moment and things keep on breaking and bills keep coming and things are just getting worse. Anyway- moan over, sorry!!!
Question... Does anyone have any ideas of a cheap and I mean seriously cheap but nice present for a 1 year olds birthday. It's my friends baby, we're not that close but I do still feel I want to give a gift as we've been invited to the tea party. Any ideas???
As I said things are seriously tight, I have a few things stashed away for such occasions but nothing suitable for a baby.
Thanks in advance
BTW, its a little girl.

Depends on how much you can afford to spend.
When my grandson was born last June I popped into Sue Ryder shop and got silvery holder for first tooth & first lock of hair -rather wish I''d left it till his biirthday now. Can't remember quite what they cost but I know they weren't a lot of money at all.
For grandsons first birthday I've made him up a box of allsorts..... ....all from the charity shop.........teddies, winnie the pooh pictures -the old fashioned ones - musical toys, dish &matching mug, stuff like that.
I'm working on a very tight budget this year and its surprising what you can find in the charity shops.
Can your friend give you a few hints maybe ?Mary
I'm creative -you can't expect me to be neat too !

A book? - The Book People do great priced books for all ages and you can often get free postage codes on MSE (type Book People into search box).
Are you crafty at all, could you make something or bake a cake for the tea party?
I was in Mothercare today and they had lots of things all over the shop with red sale stickers - you could pick up a toy for £2-£5 quite easily.
Good luck with your hunt for your gift! If you want the rainbow, you've got to put up with the rain :wave:0 -
Do you ever look after him? If so do a nice hand & footprint (in paint so cheap) & get a nice frame from a charity shop. You can do this in either bright colours or you can get hold of gold/silver from a craft shop.
If you just want to pick up a present Asda & Argos both have sales on.
Good luck

Good idea jackomdj, I saw a plaster kit in the kiddies craft section of Wilkinson's yesterday for a hand or foot print - think it was about £2. If you want the rainbow, you've got to put up with the rain :wave:0

Thanks for these ideas, I love the hand/footprint idea unfortunately between now and her birthday I don't think I'll be having her to look after, also thats really a present for her parents not for her. I had a look on the book people website and there's some nice books on there so if I look for a code I think that may be a winner. Thank you for all your ideas.

My son had his first on tues, he got lots of things siimmilar to what he already had. But my friend got play balls and the 'worth it' paddling pool from woolworths site so it can be used as a ball pool right now indoors and he can splash in the garden later. She also got be a lovely massive storage box for ontop of his wardrobe for the 'memories'
Your in some ways better off getting something for the summer outside, if they do not have children as I doubt they will have that kind off stuff yet.
Keepsakes are lovely, but to be honest, most parents have tons of the stuff by a year really!
However if your good at it and they have not already done so, bake a choccie cake and soft frost it. Then give little girl something simple and cheap. How about a nice plastic table set so she can eat off of a 'princess' plate or something?
For instance...I spent £400 on my son alone...but his favourite toy is a squeezy toy from blooming marvelous that is giraffe, that make silly noise, this was £6 and they do a cow too. The great big flashy toys hold his attention for just a few minutes, whereas giraffe is permantly in his hand, they love baloons and simple things really!
Book people free delivery codes are about.
For the parents you could ask them for say 40 good pics and do them a free collage(pay p&p) that is on the grabbit thread, sent one to my parents recently and they loved it!
Talking of mothercare, my little one loves their butterfly maraca, shakers and the bells that go on the hands. These are great as they play with for years! Also they and elc do a 'rainmaker' which is about £8, but I got mine brand new from ebay and there were loads still boxed on the site last week, wierdly!
Good luck!0 -

Its not fancy or cute but the best birthday present my DD got for her first birthday a year ago was a cheap dolly pushchair (about £5 from Asda or Wilkinsons). It is still played with a year later - and even had to go out and buy a second one for when her friend comes over. The dolls etc get pushed around the house all the time and even the boys push it around (minus passengers).0
