New Doors

I would like to replace the horrible brown doors in my house for some nice white new ones. Some joiners have quoted me 20 quid per door to hang. So is it an easy job to do and should I give it a go ?

It's not quite what you were asking but I have a suggestion that might be useful for you.

Our house has an upstairs landing which was very dark because there is no natural light and all rooms leading off it had solid wood doors. As one of the bedrooms is being used as a study and privacy is not necessary, we replaced this solid door with a partially glazed door.......which lets natural light flood into the landing.

If you have a dark landing area, you might consider changing one of the doors too.;)

It isnt a difficult job to do properly, but then Im a joiner! to be honest £20 a door is dirt cheap, as long as that includes fitting the latches and handles....Ive hung 7 in a day last week and charged £35 a door!!

If u do it yourself, just make sure the hinges are man enough to take the doors weight!

Sounds like a good quote to me.

Being an average DIYer (still got all my fingers and toes;)) it's not a hard job, but don't expect perfection at the first go.

Get the measurements of the frames and if you're lucky you can source cheap doors from B&Q etc.

Not wishing to nick your thread but...

    I'm trying to replace (cheaply) my daughters internal doors. They're 2055 x 725 (82" x 29") which is not a standard size!

Where can I source these size of doors?

My initial thought is to buy standard sizes (WIckes £18.00)and add an extra bit to the bottom (previous owner has done this to downstairs doors)

    ?

Unless u get them made to size, the only option is what you are saying, you would be looking at putting 4" on the bottom.personally i think that is to much, and depending on the finsih, i would be tempted to put a bit on both the top and bottom

We need to do this sooner rather than later (were planning to when we'd saved up a bit more but just had carpets fitted today and none of the doors will open/close and its not worth easing them (I don't think they'd stand up to it either)). The prices we've been looking at have been around £30 a door for fitting.

Out of interest where are you getting your doors from? we've had a look at B&Q, Wickes and Homebase and aren't too impressed, the doors in the price range we're looking at are a bit cheap looking. We will need 14 doors, are places like Jewson a good place to try or are they only for trade customers?

Jewsons are sooooo expensive...the ones I fitted for a customer came from Howdens at £21.99 a door, £45 a door for a 15 light glazed door(including toughened glass)

The doors were pretty good quality for the price...they come in 4 panelled 7 6 panelled knotty pine, or 4 and 6 panelled clear pine!!
