Expired guarantee?

I purchased a fish tank from Pets at Home in October 2006. In June 2007 the light in the lid had broken and there was a very unpleasant hot smell. I took the lid of the tank back, and they replaced it for me. The same thing has happened again, the same problem, the same smell. I went back to Pets at Home and explained the problem. The man I spoke with told me that they no longer stock the product (I wonder why...) and that although he couldn't say for sure, as he wasn't authorised to do so, my one-year guarantee would have expired. - He says that the guarantee runs from the date of the original purchase, and not the date of the replacement.
I have to go back in today and speak with a manager, but I'd like to know if there's anything I should know before doing so.
It seems so unfair that there is clearly a fault with the product, as it is the second one I've had. Also - if there's nothing I can do because my gaurantee has expired. If they do replace the lid- what's to say that this won't happen again, in another 6 months? I know it is only gauranteed for 12 months, but, surely they expect it to last for longer than that?!

I'd really appreciate any advice on this, as I don't really know where I stand in terms of my consumer rights.

Thanks.

how much did you pay for the tank ?

if it is a recurring problem then you would have to take the whole fish tank bank and get a replacment or a pro rata refund to get it somewhere else

the soga applies in this case
