Have you installed the USB dongle correctly and are using the correct Wifi security settings? You'll get a message about the wired connection being disconnected because you have done.

Make sure the USB wifi adapter appears in Device Manager and you can view wireless networks using the USB adapters application or using Windows wifi network applet.

It reads to me as if one you have connected the cable router to your cable network .
Two you have then connected the router via ethernet cable to the LAN port on your computer . Which would be correct .
Then enter the router and set up your ISP details password user name etc .
Save and you should then connect ok .Normal to set up connection before wireless leave wirless security off .

The USB stick is for a wireless connection between the router and any other machine .Instead of a wired connection so to make that PC wireless the router needs to be connected to ISP first then you put the wireless stick in the computer and set that up to receive the ISP connection vi wireless rather than cable .

Get your wired internet connection working first .

Ok then the normal setup for a USB stick is to install software then plug usb stick in when asked .
I would do that and uninstall the software if already installed first just to make sure .
Then check device manager once installed to see if any problems yellow exclamation marks etc .
You have at least then covered all bases in case of a faulty USB stick .

It may be that you've got it plugged in to a USB 1.1 port and it needs a USB2.0.

Try it in different ports on your PC.
There's someone in my head, but it's not me
