    very childish!

Not really, the point was it's daft to demand they tax things you don't agree with. If you do sooner or later someone will demand they tax something you have, or do.

My post may have been childish, but it was meant to illustrate that people are different. And if you demand people who are not the same as you are taxed, then someone may do it to you.

    Tax is not the answer.

If you tax plastic carrier bags out of existence then the companies who have the plastic will just make something else. And next month people will be demanding the government tax all those give away plastic key rings.

Maybe the world would would be a better place if they taxed the plastic in your wallet out of existence?

very funny geordie joe lets see who work out the irony....

There will be people who won't. I fully expect to be attacked by every sector of the community, but I still think you should not attack people because they are different to you.

And you should not demand that a tax be put on things simply because you do not agree to them.
  • I fully expect to be attacked by every sector of the community, but I still think you should not attack people because they are different to you.

and yet that's exactly what you've done to MORPH3US!

i think it's ironic that some people have nothing better to do than complain about how they're too busy to save the planet or even attempt to but have all the time in the world to insult the people that do......

i am not perfect,i do not understand ALL sides of the reuse versus recycle debate,as i'm sure most people don't if they're honest, BUT i know that most thoughtful, half decent HUMAN beings should have no issue whatsoever with taking easily portable bags back to the supermarket they came from in order to refill them.hardly a hardship?it's simply lazy and churlish not to really.

it's amazing no one complains about taking their car back to the petrol station to refill it!

and one last point for you geordie,if you don't want to save money why are you on mse?!!!!!!!!!!!!:rotfl:
    :T:jHalf a stone off,only another 2 to go!:j:T

I knew it, there's always one!
i think it's ironic that some people have nothing better to do than complain about how they're too busy to save the planet or even attempt to but have all the time in the world to insult the people that do......

I wasn't insulting anyone, I protesting against someone demanding that the things they don't like should be taxed to the hilt.

Taxing carrier bags, and cigarettes is NOT going to save the planet.
it's simply lazy and churlish not to really.

No, it's a choice people make, and we can't complain when they don't make the choice we make.

You said "i am not perfect,i do not understand ALL sides of the reuse versus recycle debate,as i'm sure most people don't if they're honest,"

So how can you criticise others when you don't know if they are right or wrong?
and one last point for you geordie,if you don't want to save money why are you on mse?!!!!!!!!!!!!:rotfl:

When did I say I don't want to save money? I was protesting against someone demanding that cigarettes be taxed to the hilt. I'm a smoker and was trying to save money by protesting against extra tax being put on fags.

And one last point for you kellybigboobs, if you can't read and understand posts why are you replying to them? :rotfl:

    Tax is not the answer.

If you tax plastic carrier bags out of existence then the companies who have the plastic will just make something else.

Like bin liners which people will then have to buy in huge quantities - as I said in my OP.

Not really, the point was it's daft to demand they tax things you don't agree with. If you do sooner or later someone will demand they tax something you have, or do.

I'm affraid its a bit too late for that, I am taxed to the hilt on my wages each month to pay for the welfare state, cushy prisons, mp's getting fat off my taxes... the list goes on....

I also pay huge amounts of tax on the petrol I use (although I try to minimise what I do use, its a necessary evil).

I pay tax on the beer that I consume, the food that I eat.....

I believe that there should be a carot and stick approach to things like plastic bags, tax them and then use the taxes to provide / look into alternatives, clean up the countryside etc.

You are right that people are different, and I can see what got your back up in my original post because you are a smoker and I detest smoking.... with the smoking ban, you must be like a wounded animal on the ultra defensive. Anyone dares to criticise smoking and you are not happy....

To be honest (slightly off topic) I couldn't give a s**t about smokers and if they want to kill themselves, thats their choice. What makes me despise smokers (not to stereotype - if the cap fits....) is a) they don't give a toss about where they blow their smoke (passive smoking) - not such a problem now.... and b) littering - so many times I have seen people throw cigarette butts out of car windows - since when did it become acceptable to do that?!? What are ash trays for in cars? and when you go on holiday on a beautiful beach or forest and there are cigarette butts everywhere, thats what makes me want to nuke all of the litter dropping smokers!

We are in complete agreement there.

I doubt that would work. The plastic is there, well at lest the raw materials to make it is. If it wasn't made into plastic carrier bags it would have to be made into something else, or dumped!

Getting rid of plastic carrier bags will not get rid of the plastic.

I don't mind anyone criticising smoke. What I do mind is them implying that raising the tax on cigarettes will save the planet.

In that case you should also not give a s**t about someone carrying their shopping home in a carrier bag as it's very unlikely that you will be harmed by it.

I agree, I also despise car drivers who drive round belching toxic fumes out the back of their cars. Anyone living in a city or built up area has to breath that crap all day, and car fumes will kill you a lot quicker than smoking.

That's why some many people choose car fumes as a means of committing suicide.

It's always been acceptable, people have been doing it since cars were invented. It's only since it became fashionable to jump on green band wagons that people started complaining about it.

For keeping loose change in for parking meters.

Nah, according to some people you can't see the fag butts for the carrier bags people throw away.

I'm sorry - but those are the most ludicrous couple of statements I have seen in many a long day.

"I also despise car drivers who drive round belching toxic fumes" I suppose you would be happier if everyone went in an electric car or electric train. Then the "belching toxic fumes " would be spewed out of a power station all over someone else - and not you. If you "despise" the Internal Combustion Engine so much I presume you will have nothing to do with anything that that relies on this evil invention. Such as the van that delivered your PC, the Tesco lorry that brings your food, the tractor that ploughs the field to grow your food, the car that brings out the doctor etc, etc, etc.

On what medical basis do you state "car fumes will kill you a lot quicker than smoking" ? If you run a hose pipe into your car from the exhaust, of course it will, (if you connected that hose pipe to a tap it would probably do it quicker). Not many people do that (despite your assertion to the contrary - see below). All the evidence appears to point the other way. I gave up smoking 35 years ago but carried on driving. I know which of those two were potentially the most harmful to me. I strongly suspect the whole of the medical profession would agree with me.

And as for:- "That's why some many people choose car fumes as a means of committing suicide." This has to be the most irrational, ill-researched, ill-thought-out statement of the year !

Could I quote from the Office of National Statistics: "hanging, strangulation and suffocation’ was responsible for almost a half of all suicides.................................. and ‘other poisoning’ accounted for only 10 per cent" (Car exhaust gas is included in 'other poisoning') Car exhaust gas specifically was responsible for 38% of that 10%.
This gives an annual number of fatalities from this cause of around 200. Hardly the Black Death !

There is too much pollution on this planet, be it from plastic bags, car exhausts, junk mail, discarded mobile 'phones or dog s**t on the pavement, but so many of the responses to these problems are just ill considered knee-jerk reactions that are never thought through. That was the point of my OP.

Sorry geordie_joe, I thought we were having a serious discussion, but the childish comments have come out again...

There are so many levels that your most recent post above is incorrect, that I don't have time to comment on them all....

It was a good discussion while it lasted anyway... cheers guys!
