Couple of points.....plastic is a by product ( waste product ?? ) of the petro chemical industry is it not ???
If it was not used to make plastic bags etc it would be burnt off into the atmosphere........
This is absolute rubbish. Please check your facts.

Most plastic bags are made of polyethylene, a polymer made from ethylene with is a petro chemical product. There are many different forms of polyethyelene, used in a variety of applications.
Ethylene is valuable product and is not burnt off into the atmosphere if not made into plastic bags.
    Manners make the man...:D

Tesco/Asda/M&S etc, etc didn't put those bags all over the British countryside and in the middle of the Pacific Ocean - sorry folks - but you did !

Correction, I most certainly did not :D, I know what you mean though!

The problem is, there are many different types of people in this and two of those types are a)people who do care about the environment, recycle eveything possible, reduce, reuse, recycle, lift share to work, switch off standby, take boxes shopping for the stuff to go in.... etc (basically me!!!) and b) those who don't give a s**t about the enviro, consume, consume, consume, seperate carrier bag for everything they buy etc...

The problem is, those who "do the right thing" as always are affected by those who "don't give a s**t".

Therefore I am happy for the government to tax plastic bags to the hilt. For the same reasons I wich the givernment would also tax "gas guzzling cars" and cigarettes more...

I do agree with what you say about double standards and MP's, but thats a much bigger issue on all "in if for all I can get" MP's.

Right, I'm off my soapbox now!

I trust its a recyclable soapbox and not one of those plastic ones that the liquid tabs come in. In fact it will have to be a wooden one as a card one wouldn't hold any weight! :)
  • Actually since increase in food prices, can't afford more than 1 plastic bag. Problem solved. So 1 plastic bag each it is then, re useable ofcourse. Anyone requiring anymore should just take shopping trolley outside and fling it into their car;) :D I guess its about everyone doing what they can to look after the planet, since everyone now lives longer and very few people can afford to retire abroad. Think that's it!:rotfl:

I read somewhere that the oil burned in flying one person to Australia and back could be used to produce 750,000 plastic bags. Tokenistic actions like a bag tax are no substitute for the kind of hard hitting measures that the science suggests we actually need. They may even be harmful if they make people feel that we've solved the problem, or worse, feel resentful towards any measure designed to protect the environment.

Never said I was perfect, far from it....

I just care about the environment and my impact on the planet. I don't think I am at the extreme either, a lot more people do a lot more for the environment that I do, but I do all that I can within my means....

I totally agree with you. They should tax disposable nappies too, they take up more land fill than anything. They should also tax any car owner who drives to work when they could get a bus.

They should tax women who have more than one pair of shoes, they've only got two feet, so they only need two shoes. Any more is a waste of precious resources.

They should tax couples who have no children and have a 3 piece suite, they've only got two backsides between them, why should they have 4 or 5 seats.

Makeup should be taxed too as it's also a waste, not to mention men's ties which are also a complete waste of material.

Sanitary protection should be taxed too, there's nothing wrong with a couple of rags or a mooncup. Less than half the population of the world use sanitary protection, so why should the minority be allowed to pollute the world.

They should also tax sat nav systems, if you don't know where you are going you shouldn't be driving.

And while their at they should tax everything else I don't like too!!!!

Right on mate, taxing it will solve all the worlds problems.

Oh yes, and they should tax your tax too, because everybody hates tax.

    very childish!

Right, i'm off to buy a gas guzzler that I don't need. Why should I bother about saving the planet for future generations, I have no kids and the trouble and I will be long gone....

Damn, this selfish over consumerism is great, more, more, more!!
