IP conflict between new vista laptop and old XP desktop

I have recently purchased a new laptop running on Vista and already had an XP-based desktop.

I setup the laptop onto the wireless network at home and it worked fine.

However, the old desktop upstairs (running on XP) now complains about an IP conflict on the network and it fails to connect to the internet.

What do I need to do to resolve this?

Any help much appreciated!

Do you know if you use DHCP? DHCP assigns IP addresses automatically, rather than having to manually specify them. To turn DHCP on on your XP machine:

Start / Settings / Network Connections / right-click on LAN connection and choose 'Properties' / Click on 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)' / Click the 'Properties' button / Ensure that 'Obtain an IP address automatically' is selected.

The process is probably similar on Vista.

You'll also need DHCP enabled on your router, but as far as I know it's always turned on by default, so if you haven't turned it off yourself you probably won't need to change anything.

    Hope this helps...

If DHCP is being used and you've not assigned a static IP address to the XP machine then open up a Command Prompt window in XP (START > Run and type cmd and click OK). Now you'll have a black window on screen.

Type the follow and press the carriage return key (Enter) after each line and await it to finish what it's doing...it will tell you:

    ipconfig /release

    and then

    ipconfig /renew

The first command strips out the IP information supplied to the XP network card/wireless card and the second command renew the address assignments from the HCP server (probably you're router).
