Benefit help for workers with fat mortgage?

Hi there, not sure if anyone can help?

My brother and his girlfriend are expecting their first baby but they are going to seriously struggle financially. They are both earning £17k each, which is like £2000 a month coming in, their mortgage on its own is £1000 a month plus everything else on top, ie £150 council tax, £100 gas elec and water, 2 cars to insure and tax and maintain, ground rent which is £60 a month, food, petrol, etc etc. They struggle every month anyway without a baby!

Would they entitled to any working tax credit as they are both earning:confused: ?
Our dream has come true... :D

Not with the amount they're earning. They would get help with child care costs and CTC but that's it.
If your mortgage is high then that's a voluntary thing and there's no assistance for it.

HOWEVER if one of them stops working completely, then they would be entitled to WTC but it's not going to be a massive amount.

Don't think they'll get help with child care charges - just £20 a week child tax credit til the babys 1st birthday, then it goes down to £10/week. Plus child benefit which is about £75/month.

You wouldn't get wtc on that income and ctc is assesed on last years income so they would prob get about £20 a week ctc and £18 child benifit. This is what happens when you take on a mortgage that you can't sustain on one wage. Why should the gov bail you out.

Me and my wife are in a similar situation as ur brother.
My wife earns £18000 and i earn £17500 our mortgage is £950 a month probably due to go up in july as our 2 year fixed deal finishes.

We had our first baby 3 months ago and believe me we are struggling big time only benefits we get is her materntity pay which keeps going down after every couple of months and about £21 CTC and £18 child benefit.

We are having to dip into our bit of savings to cope.

when we first had our son my dh was bringing home 600 a month
our mortgage was 400 so that left us with 200
    we survived.
he got a pay rise and we upped our mortgage payments and still we lived within our means.
we live comfortably now as i have been working for about 6 years now.
we dont go on holidays, just the odd weekend in a travelodge when they are cheap. we eat healthy on a minimum budget.
i have never ever once felt that the government owes me a living and i should claim benefits to subsidise my lifestyle.

The initial award is based on last years income. But if you let them know your income has decreased, they will adjust your award immediately - well within a few weeks, but backdated!

OP - That's a hefty mortgage. Is it for a flat, as they pay ground rent?

It may be worth checking out the debt free wannabe forum as they are pretty good at spotting ways to cut outgoings down, including household bills.

Prime example of borrowing well beyond your means.

The fact your mortgage is 1/2 your joint income every month is irresponsible lending from the banks. Not your faults, but mortgage should never have been agreed in the 1st place.

People dont ever think or take into account that a woman will ever get pregnant. When taking on a joint mortgage this shold be the 1st question asked:rolleyes:

BTW.. What is a ''FAT'' mortgage??????????????

i think he just means that they owe loads. and you cant just blame the banks, they are partly at fault but people also need to take some personal responsibility. this happened to me and my o/h, basically we sold up. some people might say that thats stupid - coming off the property ladder BUT the stress we were under was awful and just knowing we are free from that is enough for us.
