Morning folks

I hope I am on the right board for this.

Advise please.

I have an Amilo laptop about 4 years old or there abouts, it works fine, but the lid / screen hinge on LHS is splitting open, so much so I don’t close the lid down, and if I adjust the screen I hold my left hand over the hinge to stop it popping off / splitting any more.

So the advise I need please, it is repairable and where / what type of shop would be able to help me.

I know I live in choccie button land, but that is situated between Milton Keynes and Northampton type area.

Many thanks in advance.

Laptops are always repairable, just at what cost relative to their value / worth.

Have you tried ebay? Search for your specific laptop model and 'spares' or 'spares repair'. You might be lucky enough to get someone who is breaking one. Probably a bit fiddly to swap the parts over though.

Pack the broken area with an epoxy resine and hardener like Araldite, allow it set for a good 12-18 hours or what ever is recommend on the tin, go to your local hardware store and they will advise, not B&Q I mean the local helpfull guy down the street, this is a common occurence on most laptops, I have 6 different models on my work bench at work and it seems to happen more with certain models of laptop. Do not use super glue, it will not last very long and depending on the material that you are gluing if it is a polystyrien based plastic it will corrode or even melt.
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

I used some calico material (to stop glue touching other part of hinge which would stop it from working) with loads of araldite (the glue where you mix two parts together), I left the laptop open for a couple of days to dry properly then smoothed down a couple of edges with a nail file. It worked a treat and in fact was much stronger than the rest of the casing.
