I bought a cot bed - and it was great - loads of room for a fidget. I don't see the need for drop sides. The one I had, had two settings for the base - the high one meant you could just reach over and pick up baby - no stretching involved - as they get older and can stand - just moved it down to next level - at that age child reaches up to be lifted out anyway. For the difference in price - I'd get one with fixed sides. I also bought cotbed blankets etc which turned out to be a waste of money as my son went into a grow bag.

I don't think there is going to be a consensus on this one!

I'm in favour of cot-beds, personally. They don't cost that much more than cots and are a money-saving option in the longer-term, as you don't have to buy a smaller bed when your child outgrows the cot.

You will also save (some) money on bedding as the fitted sheets, for example, will be used for as long as the cot bed.

It's just a matter of opinion though. It depends how big the room is, how many babies you plan to have and the likely gap between them.

That's what I have misty, one that has different levels, was very handy for me as I'd had a c-section and couldn't lift very far. I had the cot-bed at the side of our bed and when she was tiny and in the moses basket out the basket into the cot, rather than using a stand.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I went for a cotbed as longer lasting for sprog. It was the best for our situation when weighing up the many good points about cots v cotbeds already posted

Agree drop sides and moveable bases are an essential!

    My word!

I knew it wasn't going to be easy, but I am none the wiser really!! Thanks all the same for your very individual opinions and advice.

For me there is no question of space really, we have a good size room, but would like to fit in chest of drawers etc. Cotbeds seem much bigger??

This is our first child, so intend to have another within 2 years. What some of you have said about changing over and the eldest going into a proper bed straightaway makes sense, leaving cot for newbie. A friend said the same to me.
So in which case no reason for bigger cotbed??

I have seen a cot I like in M & P 's-v reasonable indeed. However, no drop-side, although it does have 3 mattress positions. Any opinion on this??

Thanks to you all for your help,

    JT x

  • Hi JT,

I have a M&P cot, and it does have drop down sides, don't know the name of it (bought in 1999!)

To be honest I don't think I ever used the drop down side. When the baby(ies) was very small, they were on the highest level, so only a few inches away, as they grew bigger between 12-18months they were obviously on the lowest level, but when I needed to pick them up, they were standing up anyway! (usually bawling!!)....oh the joys.....

    Hope this helps

    Regards,
    pot
  • Cotbed every time

My oldest is still in hers at 4.5

Mine has got a drop side that goes all the way under the bed and is a Cossatta! I think

Would recommend going for a matress that has a waterproof side
    for later toilet training
    I want to...........?

Can I ask why you have chosen a cotbed rather than using a normal single size bed?
    Thanks JT x

Our original cot had drop sides- didn't use them once!!!

Mamas & Papas cots are good - but can be purchased from discount baby equipment stores etc, you don't have to go to Mamas and Papas directly!

I'd just reiterate really that it was the size of our cot that was the problem, DS1 just outgrew it/could climb out of it, way before his 2nd b'day! However he looked lost as a 22 month old in a normal size single bed!
