I have seen an advert for the Ameriacn Express Travellers Cheque card available at Thoams Cook. If you put $700 on it they give you $65. the way I read it, you can load it up and make money. Is there a catch, and has anyone used it? I'm going to the states soon, and wondering if I can get some free money!!

There are quite a few charges associated with the card, so you would need to do the maths to check it was worth it.
Whilst looking at the T&Cs on the card I was interested to see that you cannot use it to pay for the following:
• To reserve a rental car
• To reserve a hotel/motel room
• To pay for petrol “at the pump” through automated terminals
• To pay for on-board cruise or train charges and some in-flight purchases.
And amused to see that you cannot use it to pay for the following:
• To pay for bail bondsmen.
• To pay for detective agencies.
• To pay for personal services such as escort agencies, introduction services, or massage parlours.0 -

I actually ordered one of these from Thomsons last week. They give $50 when you add $700. It’s not as much as Thomas cook but they were wavering the £15 fee (a promotion which I was informed runs until the end of the month). So with the free $50, it worked out at an exchange of approx 1.86. About the best exchange you’ll get anywhere afaik. It may be worth asking other companies if they would also waver the fee – especially if they’re offering a lager cash incentive.
As has been pointed out there are limitations with how you can spend it but it shouldn’t be too much of a task over a week or two.
With this and a Nationwide account you should get the pound the dollar possible.0
