What % of your electricity do you use "of-peak" if you are E7/E10 etc?

Please supply any other relevant info e.g what tarrif you are on (E7 / E10 etc.), how you achive a high % off-peak usage etc.

To work out, divide off-peak units by total units (off-peak + peak) and multiply result by 100

i.e. 100 off-peak, 60 peak would be (100/160) x 100 = 62.5%
 I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.

  • Interesting... A less than 10% result

I would have thought using so little on the lower rate wouldn't have been economical given the increased price of the normal rate (E7/Twin Vs Standard Single Tarrif)

I use economy seven units as much as possible, missus reckons it'll only save us (and I quote) "pennys per year" - this based on not knowing the price per unit or number of units used. Simply amazing.

I have E10 controlling storage heaters charging 2 hours in the morning and 1 hour in the afternoon which I have found to be much warmer (No Top Up Required) and use 23% less units than overnight charging (E7) controlled by the previous time radio timeswitch. (Based on the previous years figures, Also Fitted New Storage Heaters).

Here's my last 5 months actual usage since the E10 meter was installed and an estimate for this month based on usage so far and previous usage for May - Oct when no storage heaters will be on.

    Nov 2008 - 269 Peak Units & 536 Off Peak Units (66.58% Off Peak)
    Dec 2008 - 254 Peak Units & 830 Off Peak Units (76.56% Off Peak)
    Jan 2009 - 235 Peak Units & 1082 Off Peak Units (82.15% Off Peak)
    Feb 2009 - 203 Peak Units & 892 Off Peak Units (81.46% Off Peak)
    Mar 2009 - 226 Peak Units & 854 Off Peak Units (79.07% Off Peak)
    Apr 2009 - 210 Peak Units & 430 Off Peak Units (67.18% Off Peak)
    May 2009 - 210 Peak Units & 186 Off Peak Units (46.96% Off Peak)
    June 2009 - 203 Peak Units & 180 Off Peak Units (46.99% Off Peak)
    July 2009 - 210 Peak Units & 186 Off Peak Units (46.96% Off Peak)
    Aug 2009 - 210 Peak Units & 186 Off Peak Units (46.96% Off Peak)
    Sep 2009 - 203 Peak Units & 180 Off Peak Units (46.99% Off Peak)
    Oct 2009 - 210 Peak Units & 186 Off Peak Units (46.96% Off Peak)

Average for the year works out at 61.24% Off Peak, but this does not tell the whole story :

Other than the flexibilty benefit of E10 in the winter is the off peak units in the summer reducing cost as well as being more convient than E7 only being overnight. The cost of E7 off peak units is 0.4ppu less in my case but this is balanced with a £25 a year reduction in the service charge and a 1.1ppu less charge on all on peak units.

Thanks DFH4NP, do you know if during your off-peak hours all your usage is charged off-peak or is it just the heating?

Out of interest, what supply region and supplier do you use?

I'm Norweb / United Utilities and so far, only Scottish & Southern say they can do E10.

I've been told on another thread that both e.on/powergen and edf do it but edf have denied this and e.on haven't replied yet.

Interestingly Scottich & Southern have a dedicated number to call for E10, does anyone know if any other suppliers have similar numbers?

    Hi mute_posting

All usage is charged at the lower rate during off peak hours.

I am in the Scottish power region and the e10 is supplied by Hydro which is part of SSE.

Normally they will not fit an E10 meter if there are storage heaters in the house, I had it fitted once I removed the old heaters and before the new ones were installed, I only had to fit a time clock and a contactor to operate the heaters which costs £100 all in. I managed to get three new creda manual storage heaters off ebay (1 Large and 2 Medium) for £250.

ahhh I see  me thinks I'm being too honest with them by mentioning the electric heating - will just stick to telling them about the water lol

I guess this is a case of them not wanting to give people "too much" cheap electricity is it?

In fact my whole idea of getting E10 was because I'm worried apart from the water I'm not going to get much use out of the off-peak (apart from fridge-freezer etc that will be on 24/7) mainly because although I have electric UFH, it hasn't been on this winter and the temperature has never dropped below 17 dec C that I have seen (if that makes sense lol)

Basically it will be good to have some more off-peak at more usefull times for washing, cooking etc..

  • Just had a reply from Southern Electric regarding E10 (Economy10), will copy here for any others that may be interested as it confirms some technical details.

    MP
Economy 10 has been developed for use with electrically heated wet radiator systems. The low rate is available from midnight to 5am, 1pm to 4pm and 8pm to 10pm GMT. The normal rate applies at all other times.

Electricity used at the normal rate costs slightly more than our standard domestic rate, but everything you use during the low periods costs much less than the normal price. Therefore the more electricity you use during the low periods, the more you can save.

With the Economy 10, you have just one meter which gives two separate
readings. One measures electricity used at the normal rate; the other measures electricity used at the low rate. Economy 10 is best suited to electrically-heated wet radiator systems.

The meter has only one output, the electronic boiler needs to be programmed to coincide with the low rate on the meter to get cost efficient heating and hot water.

Economy 10 is usually split into into three lower rate periods of two, three and five hours which occur in the afternoon, evening and overnight.
Contact your supplier, or better still your regional distributor, as exact switching times vary by area.

We had an EDF Eco 20:20 meter fitted a few months back and the first readings from it recently.

It showed we had used nearly 60% of our units at off peak times so quite chuffed.
