Can someone please tell me what the difference between DVD-R is & DVD+R? I have used -R before, but wondered what the difference is...

I am needing to buy DVD's - is it better to spend a bit more for top names or not? I am looking to buy the 100 packs.

Thanks

DVD-R and DVD+R are just different formats. Many (but not all) DVD players can use both DVD-R and DVD+R, but it's worth checking if you're getting a 100 pack.

I don't use DVDs much myself, but I've heard that Verbatim are considered very reliable... not sure about other brands.

there are some minor differences. the only one i remember is dvd-r discs are more likely to need to be finalized to be able to watch them on other equipment.

DVD plus R is a bit more advanced in the error correction and readability than DVD dash ,DVD - was at one time more available than + . Nowadays a lot of DVD Players that record from the TV to disc prefer + format .
I tend to buy plus over - but would not be to fussed unless my DVD player was fussy.
The better brands are more likely to work in most DVD players . Verbatim Tayo Yundun Ritek Traxdata Arrita to name a few . Made in Japan discs usually best .
I would not buy a 100 without testing a smaller sample first . Even buying the major brands does not mean for instance that Verbatim have made the disc with their brand name on .

Thanks for all the help.. I have just noticed that 1 of our DVD players, only has the - sign, the rest have both, so I will need to stick to the -R for now.

    Thanks again

    One more thing - should I go for x8 4.7GB OR x16 700MB?

Not sure what the difference is?

    Thanks - again

I think for DVD, you want X8 (write speed) 4.7GB (capacity).

The other one X16 700MB is a CD and not DVD. The capacity is reduced.
Hoping this year is better than the last. :)

http://adterrasperaspera.com/blog/2006/10/30/how-to-choose-cddvd-archival-media/ explains all the technical details.

The long-and-short of it is that DVD-R is a bit more compatible and will more likely work on a random DVD player appliance, but DVD+R is a bit more robust. I use DVD+Rs exclusively because I value the data I'm recording, but if I was burning video DVDs for strangers, I might consider using DVD-Rs (DVD+R has worked so far for all the people I've burnt video DVDs for, though).

If you burn a disc at say 16X and it does not work try again at slower speed .
